Kayaking on the DordogneThe County of Dordogne, with its capital Perigieux, is often called by its historical name of Perigord. Dordogne or Perigord is famous for its excellent cuisine and wines, as well as the hospitality of its inhabitants.

A tourist can enjoy the most wonderful discoveries. The surroundings offer for instance.

• Numerous pre-historical caves
• Small and peaceful river beaches
• Pretty stalactite cave sites
• Friendly green meandering country
• Picturesque villages
• Charming mediaeval towns
• Many castles

The most beautiful section of the Dordogne river is located between the towns Souillac and Bergerac. It offers many possibilities for canoeing and therewith enjoying the beauty of its scenery. The area also offers exciting opportunities for inspiring hiking and biking trips.

“Le Prieuré” is very centrally and ideally located to visit the well-known towns such as:

Castle CleuriacRocamadour: One of the most famous pilgrimage sites since 1166. It is still considered a holy place and is a popular destination for travelers. Its beautiful location on top of a rock overlooking the Alzou valley draws many visitors regardless of religious affiliation.

Gouffre de Padirac: This enormous 35 metre wide and 75 metre deep crater was created when a cave collapsed. In the resultant enormous web of caves one can make an underground boat-tour amidst the stalactites.

Sarlat: A beautiful medieval city that has more medieval, renaissance and 17th Century facades than any other French city. In Sarlat you will find one of France’s best markets every Saturday. In the summer season you will find foie gras, walnuts, a variety of cheeses and many more delights for sale. Early fall will bring truffles and many other varieties of mushrooms. Sadly, it can be very crowded in the summer season so we suggest you get there early. Nonetheless, we strongly suggest you put this on the agenda.

Beynac: A Beautiful medieval town on the Dordogne with, perched upon the rocks, the 13th Century castle that was once unconquered - now within reach by foot and car. The castle has two bastions, a big Gothic ‘Salle des Etats’, a house chapel with 16th Century frescoes and big stone stairs.

Domme: The town of Domme is a golden yellow ‘bastide’ replete with medieval gates. It is situated on a 212 metre-high rock, which provides a breathtaking view of the Dordogne valley. The town has held on to most of its original character, and together with its caves, Domme is well worth a visit.
